The Buon Giorno Cafe Story

Founder Louis Martorella, opened the original Buon Giorno Café approximately 9 years ago, in 1993. At that time of the opening, it was nothing more than a small coffee shop, where he served Fresh Squeezed Juices, Fresh Brewed Gourmet Coffee, Fresh Pastries made daily and a few small Home Made food items.

Being a man who has always loved to travel, Louis Martorella experienced all that he could while exploring other parts of the US and its Territories. Louis fell in love with the “Small, Quaint, and Friendly” Cafes that he frequented, mainly in South Beach Miami. It was at one particular visit at his favorite morning stop in South Beach that inspired the dream of opening a Morning Café of his own. Being a native of Pittsburgh, and known for his ever-present smile, stylish attire and vibrant personality, it seemed only natural that this be his destiny.

In the beginning, it was no more than a small Family owned and operated Café, with his Wife May, Sister Cheryl, Father James and Son Louis Jr., working the majority of the hours, that started at an early 5am. Making his patrons feel as though they entered their “own” Coffee Shop each and everyday, Louis would listen to what the customers wanted, and to the surprise of most, he delivered their requests. If they wanted sandwiches - he offered sandwiches. If they requested delivery items, he delivered. The reason for Louis's confidence is his undeniable devotion to his products. Traveling to New York each and every year for the food show, he would walk the streets of Little Italy intent on finding the best mozzarella, the best prosciutto, and the best pecorino cheese. But most importantly, the “unique” items that Buon Giorno Cafes use exclusively for as long as they can be kept secret!

Being Customer driven, Louis always will try and deliver what his customers want, "If a customer wants something and can provide me with a resource, I'll have that item in the kitchen within two days," he says.

With Louis’ focus on his customer’s desires, it was only a matter of time that the one time small Family Owned Café, would transform into one of the most frequented morning stops for many Downtown Professionals. And then subsequently turned into one of the best and most popular lunch eateries in all of the Downtown Area.

The popularity of Buon Giorno Café soon demanded a necessary expansion that included a full kitchen re-construction and more seating capacity to accommodate his increasingly loyal and expanding clientele.

Approximately 5 years after he opened the doors of The Original Buon Giorno Café, Louis Martorella along with his name-sake Son, Louis Jr., opened Buon Giorno Café 2 in the National City Bank Building on Stanwix Street. It only made sense that a third location was imminent. Buon Giorno Café Market Square was then planned and under construction. Buon Giorno Market Square offers full Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Menu selections, along with a fine selection of Top Shelf Spirits featuring one of Pittsburgh’s widest selections of Premium Vodkas. Couple this with a “one of a kind” Tiramasu, other mouth watering dessert selections, and an atmosphere that can only be described as relaxed and fun, is what keeps what were once Louis’ patrons, but now his friends, returning time and time again!

Beating stacked odds, Louis, his Wife May, his Son Louis, Jr., Ron Gargani among others, have not only survived the challenge of owning and operating multiple Restaurant locations, but have made them a success. And all the while doing what Louis has always done best… Having Fun with the Public Smile!
